George H.W. Bush, the 41st President of the United States and patriarch of America’s most successful political dynasty, has died.
Despite being born into privilege, Bush pursued a four-decade career in public service.
Still, his 1988 presidential victory wasn’t assured.
Arguably until this six-word rallying cry drew a stark contrast between the Texas Republican and Michael Dukakis.
“Read my lips: No new taxes!”
Yet despite ending the Cold War and driving Saddam Hussein from Kuwait, a sagging economy and failed promise (see above) doomed Bush 41 to a relatively unknown governor from Arkansas.
The rest, as they say, is history.
