The Democrats have high hopes for taking back Congress in November. Which makes what Kirsten Gillibrand let slip Sunday all the more concerning. The Senator and Presidential hopefull revealed that if the Democrats take back control of Congress, they want to try to “get rid of ICE.
Daily Caller reports:
Democrats should immediately move to abolish the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) if they regain majorities in Congress, Democratic New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand said on Sunday.
“So when we flip the House and flip the Senate, I think the first thing we should do is deal with the children who have been separated from their families at the border. I think we should get rid of ICE,” Gillibrand said at the New York City festival OZY Fest, where she shared a stage with left-wing actress Chelsea Handler.
“We should separate out two missions, the anti-terrorism mission, the national security mission, and then on the other side make sureyou’re do, making sure you’re looking at immigration as a humanitarian issue,” Gillibrand added.
“These are civil issues, these are families, look at it as the economic engine that it is, that immigration is our strength, our diversity is what makes our country and our economy so strong,” she said.
While Gillibrand is not the first Democrat to endorse dismantling the agency tasked with border security, her open antagonism towards ICE may signal a growing consensus among Democrats. Which is why a Democratic majority very well might vote on it as early as next year if they win in November.
