What’s the silliest way to land yourself in jail? It might just be too much generosity with your plastic straws.
In Santa Barbara, California, you can face up to $1,000 fine and six months in jail for giving plastic drinking straws to customers at restaurants.
The city’s new resolution, passed Tuesday, cracks down on all kinds of plastic utensils—but especially on the ignominious plastic drinking straw.
It shall be unlawful for any food provider or beverage provider to use plastic beverage straws, or to provide, distribute, or sell plastic beverage straws to any person.
And unlike other cities with similar bans, Santa Barbara makes no exception for people with disabilities—even though plastic drinking straws only make up a tiny fraction of plastic waste.
While nobody has actually gone to jail yet for distributing drinking ease, the City won’t rule out the possibility that they will give out the maximum penalty.
